Message Well, my Z is back on the road. We had everything we needed a few weeks ago, but I have been very busy the past two months with training on the 757 and 767, that I really have not been just dying to get it back. Also, Mark and Kyle have been so busy I just told them not to worry about it. Well, my training was over last Friday, and Sport Compact called SGP last Thursday wanting to shoot my car in Dallas this past Sunday. Well, needless to say, this lit a fire under our butts. We got it running late Sat. afternoon, cleaned it up, and drove to Dallas Sunday morning. Saw some good racing, had the photo shoot and drove back.
As for what we changed. The 555's were replaced with 740's. The heads were redone with 1 mm oversized stainless steal valves, a Twin Power ignition was installed, a new B&B quad tip exhaust, a fuel pressure regulator and the turbos were upgraded from the 16G to 18G TD05's. The first thing we noticed was the way it sounded at start up. The larger valves really bring out the sound of the larger cams. This thing sounds like it has a 427 in it. I mean it sounds BAD ASS. The 740s are working fine. The newer type of injector that the 95's have can meter the fuel a lot more precisely than the older plunger type. Even after driving to Dallas and back, there is no blackening of the exhaust tips, and my gas mileage was 21 mpg on the way up, and 21.5 on the way back. My boost is set at 14 psi for right now, but I can tell that it is faster now at 14 than the 16G's were at 17 lbs. I think that 14 to 15 psi is going to be the limit on pump gas with the 18's. My EGT's hit a 890 degrees at 14 lbs and you really don't want to do more than 900 degrees. The lag is still minimal, at most maybe 300 to 400 rpm later than the 16Gs. It's fully spooled by 4200 to 4300 rpm. Of course the larger valves also play a roll in the added lag, so it's hard to say how much of it is due to the turbos alone. The pull at the top end is incredible. The combination of the larger valves and turbos is a sweet thing indeed. We will be going to the dyno in the next couple of weeks. I want to first see what we can get from pump gas, than, with race fuel.
